I’ve heard many people say “I wish there was a Tinder for friends”. I’ve often found myself wondering why there’s fuck all for gals and guys to actually make friends in cities until I found my Manchester tribe. I found Girl Gang Manchester around a year ago, but either I’ve been tied up with commitments or double-booked. I finally got some time to attend one of their most recent events to find my very own gal tribe.
If you didn’t know Girl Gang MCR is a collective of creators and thinkers that wanted to create a safe space for gals and guys to learn, discover and make new friends. They run frequent events from workshops and skill-sharing to dynamic talks with leading industry gals to immersive film screenings. Their whole focus is to empower women to succeed in their lives, in whatever shape or form that may be. This little community has grown and grown in the last few years and it’s been great to watch.
If you’re new to Manchester or want to join a local, no pressure group – these guys are a great place to start!
Firstly, The Wonder Inn is something completely unexpected in terms of a venue. From the outside, it kind of looks like an old man’s pub to put it bluntly. But inside, it’s a magical hippy cafe. The decor is beautiful, yet super simple and felt like a great venue.
Attending this event on my own, I had no idea what to expect but at the same time was willing to try just about anything. The room was quite cosy for the event. I wrote my name on a sticker and got going straight away. You just know this event is going to be filled with lots of friendly gals and guys. Because everybody’s there for one reason – to make friends.
Speed Mate-ing has the same premise as Speed Dating. Each section of the event was timed, imitating the speed dating aspect, but just with friends.
I first met Caron and Viv, two bubbly gals from Manchester who were also new to these events. We got chatting straight away and bonded over talks about wine, our weekends and trying to figure out what exactly was going on. We took lots of pictures on the old-school disposable cameras dangling from the ceiling – all great fun.
The first game included a list in which you had to find the matching person to the list. For example, “Knows all the words to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air Theme song” and you have to match it to the right person. FYI I’m one of the “Knows all the words to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air Theme song” gals…
Many of the tasks involved you switching partners and learning about each other. There was a ‘what are your current faves?” section, where you discussed what you were currently loving. Lots of this reminded me of the actual blogging community interestingly enough, imagine Twitter chats, but in real life!
As my first Girl Gang MCR event, I had a bloody lovely time with some great gals! It was really great to connect with some new people. Mates over dates and all that…
